UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry
The UK Covid-19 Inquiry is an independent public inquiry set up to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, to learn important lessons for the future. This inquiry will not deal with issues of civil and criminal liability, instead recommendations for future change will be presented.
About Service
Public inquiries are independent investigations, established in response to public concern about a particular event or set of events
An inquiry typically sets out to establish:
- What happened, and why?
- What decisions went wrong, and what went right?
- What lessons can be learnt to prevent a recurrence of any adverse impacts from these events?
The inquiry was formally opened on 20th July 2022 by the Chair, Baroness Heather Hallett, a former Court of Appeal Judge. Baroness Hallett is highly experienced in this area and has previously led the inquest into the 7/7 London bombings and ‘On the runs’ inquiry.

The Northern Ireland Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice believe that while there is a UK-wide Inquiry, a complementary Northern Irish Inquiry should take place. P.A. Duffy & Co. Solicitors Belfast, Omagh and Dungannon support this and are advising that a complementary inquiry in Northern Ireland should be established as soon as possible.
