Applying for Irish Citizenship by Naturalisation To apply for Irish Citizenship you can make a Naturalisation Application in the Republic of Ireland. You can make an application if you marry or engage in a civil partnership with an Irish Citizen for at least 3 years or if you have been living in the state for at least 5 of the last 9 years including one full year prior to the date of application. Eligibility for Naturalisation Applicants must be over 18 and be of good character. Applicants must also meet the conditions of residence, intend to continue living in Ireland and be willing to attend a citizenship ceremony and make a declaration of fidelity. Requirements for Successful Naturalisation Application In order to satisfy the requirement of legal residence an applicant must have been resident in the State for at least 5 of the last 9 years, including one year of continuous residence immediately before the date of application. Applicants must also show that they have built up sufficient ‘Reckonable Residence’, which means that you must demonstrate that you have lived in the State legally for 1825 days over the past 9 years. Naturalisation Based on Marriage or Civil Partnership Eligible applicants must have been married, or in a civil partnership with an Irish citizen for at least 3 years prior to application. Applicants must also have been living together for a period of no less than 3 years prior to making an application and have been resident in Ireland for 3 out of the last 5 years, including 1 year of continuous residence prior to the date of application.
